2008 CALIFORNIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE MEN'S BASKETBALL HONORS
CAL PAC CHAMP DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA TAKES FOUR OF FIVE TOP HONORS
Oakland, Calif. — Dominican University of California sophomore forward Adam Chavis was named the 2008 California Pacific Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Menlo College's Bryon Wesley was selected Defender of the Year while Dominican freshman guard Michael Wells was named Freshman of the Year. Dominican's head coach Bret Tovani earned Coach of the Year, Commissioner Don Ott announced.
Chavis, from Oakland, Calif., leads the conference in points (17.5 ppg) and field goal percentage (.550). He is fifth in the conference in rebounds, averaging 6.93 per game, and ninth in free throw percentage (.711). Chavis has started 22 and appeared in all 29 of Dominican's games and has earned Cal Pac Player of the Week honors five times this season.
Wesley, from San Diego, Calif., earns the Defender of the Year honor for the third straight season. Wesley has started 24 of 25 games for the Oaks. The six-foot-three forward became Menlo's all-time rebounding leader with 573, 165 which have come this season. He is tenth in the conference in defensive rebounds (4.1/game) and seventh in steals (1.8/game). Wesley was named Cal Pac Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, 2007.
Wells, from Claremont, Calif., is third in the Cal Pac in with a 1.74 assist to turnover ratio and fifteenth in assists with 2.03 per game. The freshman guard has started in 21 and appeared in all 29 of Dominican's games.
Tovani earns his second California Pacific Conference Coach of the Year award after leading the Penguins to their fifth conference title in six years. Dominican was picked to finish third in the Cal Pac coaches' preseason poll and the Penguins finish conference play with an 14-2 record.
