Menlo captures third straight Cal Pac title
Courtesy Menlo College Athletics: San Rafael, CA —For the third straight year, the Menlo women’s volleyball team claimed the Cal-Pac Championship with a 3-2 win over Dominican University at California last night (30-15, 24-30, 30-13, 27-30, 17-15).
Junior libero Christa Hewett broke her own school record that she claimed in the first meeting with the Penguins as she dug 50 balls, the second highest in the country at the NAIA level. Senior outside hitter, Sanoe’ Eselu , had a career high 26 kills as freshman Kaela Arnett had her eleventh double-double of the season as she recorded 14 kills and 27 digs.
As a team, the Lady Oaks had three season-highs with 75 kills, 68 assists and 143 digs. Adding freshman middle hitter Deborah Bekowies's 13 kills, Menlo had three players in double-digits in kills.
“This is the best team I have worked with at Menlo in regards to all the girls getting along on the court and having fun while playing the game they love,” stated Menlo Head Coach Bill Imwalle , “Sanoe', Sara (Bungarz) , and Christa were the glue that kept this team focused for their goal of a championship. All of the credit goes to the girls along with Assistant Coach Dave Faz and volunteer assistant Greg Lara.”
That championship goal was set on August 19 as the squad discussed their individual and team goals at the first practice of the 2006 season. In the past three seasons, the Lady Oaks have ruled the Cal Pac with a 45-1 record and two undefeated seasons.
The Lady Oaks finish the 2006 regular season with a 19-7 overall record and will play #2 nationally ranked Fresno Pacific on Tuesday, November 14 at 7 p.m. in Fresno.
